Several investigations have been carried out around coffee and its antidepressant effect. One of them is the study carried out by researchers at Qingdao University, in China. Analyzing 15 previously conducted studies with 330,000 people found that participants reduced their risk of depression by 8% if they drank one cup of coffee a day.
At Harvard University, over a 10-year period, some experts collected data on 51,000 women who did not have depression when the study began. At the end of those 10 years, they published the conclusion of their research in the JAMA magazine, in which they stated that women who had more cups of coffee a day had a 20% lower risk of depression, compared to those women who drank very little or no coffee during the day.
Additionally, in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, an analysis of 12 studies was published, examining the relationship between caffeine and depression in 346,913 healthy individuals and 8,146 cases of depression. The analysis conducted concluded that caffeine, especially the one you can find in coffee, is helpful in preventing depression.
However, everything should be measured, because excess caffeine produces anxiety, nausea, agitation, headaches and pressure increases, causing an effect contrary to what is expected. A study carried out in 2000, which was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology, observed that people who drank more coffee have a lower risk of depression suicide, preserving this effect up to 8 cups a day. But, if people consumed more than 8 cups of coffee a day, the risk of suicide increased due to the anxiety produced by excess caffeine.
What is the secret of the antidepressant effect of coffee?
